An imminent social media restriction for individuals under the age of 16 is on the horizon, with the Technology Secretary advocating for decisive action to safeguard young users on the internet.

While a final verdict is pending, Technology Secretary Liz Kendall strongly hinted at the potential prohibition of popular apps such as TikTok, Snapchat, and Instagram for millions of youths until they reach the age of 16.

The Government’s online safety consultation revealed that 90% of parents are in favor of implementing age restrictions similar to those in Australia, indicating that enforcing a ban is being seriously considered.

During an interview with the Sunday Mirror, Ms. Kendall expressed the overwhelming support from parents and their concerns regarding the negative impact of excessive social media use on their children’s well-being.

The consultation garnered responses from over 100,000 individuals, including approximately 40,000 parents, with a final decision expected to be reached in the coming weeks after thorough review by the Government.

Ms. Kendall emphasized the need for swift action and confirmed the readiness to utilize legal powers to enforce the restriction by the end of the year to align with the urgency expressed by concerned parents.

Drawing inspiration from Australia’s precedent, where a similar ban was put in place last year, several European countries are contemplating comparable measures to enhance online safety for minors.

Regarding the feasibility of adopting the Australian model in the UK, Ms. Kendall acknowledged the persistent efforts of young people to circumvent regulations but highlighted the importance of reinforcing age verification protocols to uphold the proposed restrictions.

Emphasizing the necessity of preparing youth for the digital landscape, Ms. Kendall referenced a local school in Leicester that educates students on online discernment and responsible behavior.

While acknowledging the benefits of technology like AI, Ms. Kendall stressed the importance of ensuring its safe and responsible use to maintain public trust and maximize its potential benefits.
