The chief of the World Health Organization made a visit to Bunia, located in eastern Congo, on Saturday. This city is at the heart of an unusual Ebola outbreak where the virus is spreading rapidly despite enhanced healthcare facilities and recent aid deliveries.

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus is scheduled to inspect a treatment center and engage in discussions with local authorities, healthcare workers, and affected families in Bunia.

Tedros emphasized the importance of providing comprehensive support to combat the disease at its core and ensuring all necessary assistance is readily available during a press briefing on Friday.

As of Friday, the WHO confirmed 906 suspected cases and 223 suspected deaths related to the outbreak in Congo. Additionally, Uganda reported nine cases and one fatality according to the Ugandan health ministry.

The specific strain of Ebola causing the outbreak, the Bundibugyo virus, currently has no approved treatment or vaccine.

Despite the arrival of medical aid from the European Union and the US pledging $80 million in additional support, the response efforts at Bunia’s hospitals are facing challenges to keep pace with the rapidly spreading outbreak, as highlighted by Doctors Without Borders.

The situation is further complicated by local residents’ frustration over strict medical protocols for handling bodies of victims, leading to attacks on healthcare facilities. Additionally, rebel groups and ethnic militias in the region have impeded relief efforts.

Border closures by neighboring countries and travel bans imposed by various nations have been criticized by Tedros as ineffective in containing the outbreak. He urged countries to promote transparency and reconsider these restrictions.

The WHO remains optimistic that the Democratic Republic of Congo, despite previous Ebola outbreaks, can successfully control and contain the current situation with the collaboration of international aid and coordinated efforts on the ground.
