A tragic incident unfolded on the A1 in Northumberland resulting in the loss of two lives and causing severe injuries to three individuals.

Northumbria Police responded to a two-vehicle collision near Wandylaw junction, north of Alnwick, around 4 am on Saturday.

The incident involved a silver Nissan Juke heading southbound, which collided with a blue Vauxhall Corsa traveling in the opposite direction. Emergency services arrived at the scene where the drivers of both vehicles, a woman in her 50s from the Juke and a man in his 40s from the Corsa, were tragically pronounced deceased.

Following the crash, two passengers from the Juke, a woman in her 20s and a school-aged boy, and a female passenger from the Corsa in her 20s, sustained serious injuries and were hospitalized. Authorities have notified the next of kin for all occupants and are providing support through specialized officers.

A portion of the A1 in both directions between Ellingham and Purdy Lodge was temporarily shut down for about ten hours but has since reopened, as reported by Chronicle Live.

The Northumbria Police’s Roads Policing Unit is now seeking witnesses to provide any information. They are particularly interested in receiving CCTV or dashcam footage capturing events leading up to the collision.

Sergeant Alex Partington from Northumbria Police expressed condolences to the affected families and emphasized ongoing support. He stated that the investigation into the crash’s circumstances is underway, with appeals for motorists and witnesses in the area at the time of the incident to step forward.

Sergeant Partington urged individuals with dashcam footage or any relevant information to assist the investigation by providing details, emphasizing the importance of even seemingly minor information in shedding light on the incident.

Those with information or footage are encouraged to contact Northumbria Police through social media, live chat, or online report forms on the force’s website. Alternatively, they can reach out by calling 101 and referencing the case under NP-20260530-0159.
