Keir Starmer expressed that the UK will play a central role in Europe leading up to a crucial UK-EU summit in Brussels next month. Demonstrating determination, the Prime Minister set July 22 as the date for the meeting during discussions with European leaders at the G7 summit in Evian-les-Bains, France.

Amidst speculation about his political future, Mr. Starmer faces a potential challenge from Andy Burnham following the Makerfield by-election on Thursday. Downing Street affirmed Mr. Starmer’s dedication to fulfilling the responsibilities for the British populace when questioned about his presence at the upcoming summit.

Unveiling the date for the UK-EU summit, Mr. Starmer emphasized the commitment of his Labour Government to reestablishing the relationship with Europe and positioning Britain at the core of the continent. The agenda includes addressing the cost of living, enhancing employment opportunities, and fostering prospects for young individuals.

A youth mobility agreement enabling individuals under 30 from the UK and EU member states to reside, work, and study in each other’s nations is anticipated to be finalized at the summit. Nevertheless, discussions persist on matters such as tuition fees for EU students in England, limitations on participant numbers, and the issuance of visas for British youth by European countries.

Downing Street highlighted ongoing efforts with the EU to formulate an equitable youth experience program, creating fresh avenues for youth engagement in living, working, studying, and traveling. The Prime Minister’s commitment to acting in the national interest remains unwavering.

Debates surrounding Brexit reignited recently after leadership contender Wes Streeting suggested the possibility of rejoining the EU. Andy Burnham, who previously dismissed the notion of reversing Brexit, now appears to have softened his stance, expressing hope for the UK to reenter the EU during his lifetime.

During the G7 summit, Mr. Starmer engaged in separate discussions with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President António Costa. Mr. Costa emphasized the importance of close EU-UK collaboration for shared European security, resilience, and prosperity, underscoring the joint efforts to ensure the success of the upcoming summit in Brussels on July 22.
