British Royal Navy’s Investigation Reveals Cause of HMS Prince of Wales’ Breakdown
A recent inquiry by the Royal Navy has unveiled the reason behind the latest malfunction of the UK’s costliest warship, HMS Prince of Wales. The vessel encountered a setback while fulfilling a crucial defense mission.
Launched in 2017, HMS Prince of Wales holds a prestigious status among the UK’s warships and recently played a key role in NATO’s defense efforts against heightened Russian presence in the Norwegian Sea. Leading the anti-submarine exercise called Dynamic Mongoose, the warship departed from Loch Long, Argyll and Bute, Scotland, to ensure security in the Atlantic and High North regions.
During a stop in Stavanger, Norway, the Ministry of Defence reported a minor technical issue, causing a brief delay. Despite this setback, the ship is expected to resume its voyage shortly. The ministry emphasized the ongoing collaboration with allies to enhance global security and defense cooperation.
Accompanied by Type 45 destroyer HMS Duncan and tanker RFA Tidespring, HMS Prince of Wales navigated Nordic waters as part of its mission. The warship, weighing 65,000 tonnes, is equipped to carry up to 72 aircraft, including 36 F-35B fighter jets, with a service life expectancy of 50 years.
Captain Ben Power expressed confidence in the vessel’s capabilities, highlighting its commitment to NATO and the Joint Expeditionary Force. The crew’s families were acknowledged for their unwavering support during deployments away from home waters.
The recent voyage follows a previous breakdown in August 2022, when the ship faced mechanical issues off the Isle of Wight. Despite these challenges, the Royal Navy remains dedicated to demonstrating its operational prowess and strengthening international defense alliances.
