A significant drone attack from Ukraine has caused extensive damage to key Russian military sites shortly after Vladimir Putin rejected Volodymyr Zelensky’s proposal for face-to-face negotiations to end the conflict. Kyiv launched multiple strikes on Russian targets overnight on June 6, targeting the St. Petersburg and Leningrad regions, including the Kronstadt Marine Plant and a naval ammunition depot in Lebyazhye.

Following Zelensky’s warning to Putin about potential internal dissent leading to a coup if the war continues, Putin, during the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, declined talks and instead urged his troops to fight harder. Despite his rhetoric, Russian military sites were engulfed in flames today as a result of Ukrainian strikes, showcasing Kyiv’s increasing confidence in direct confrontation.

The attacks resulted in a significant fire at the naval ammunition depot in the Leningrad region, prompting a Category 1 alert due to hazardous explosives. St. Petersburg Governor Alexander Beglov advised residents to stay indoors, anticipating disruptions in mobile internet services. Uncertainty loomed over Putin’s whereabouts following the attacks, with reports suggesting he might have access to bunkers in St. Petersburg.

The strikes contradicted Putin’s claims of victory in the war, with Ukraine repeatedly targeting Kronstadt, a key military facility near St. Petersburg. Reports indicated that Ukrainian drones hit submarines at Kronstadt and the V. A. Fock Institute of Physics in Petrodvorets. Additionally, a massive fire erupted at the Poltava oil depot in the Krasnodar region, while an unconfirmed fire at an oil refinery in western Siberia raised concerns over fuel supply disruptions to occupied territories.

Further strikes on strategic routes in Ukraine, including Hell’s Highway, caused chaos and forced the Putin regime to impose transportation restrictions. Ukrainian drones also targeted the Research Institute of Marine Thermal Engineering in St. Petersburg, impacting Russia’s naval weapon development capabilities. The city of Mariupol in the Black Sea, under Russian occupation, was also hit by Ukrainian strikes in response to Putin’s refusal to engage in talks.

As the conflict escalates, Zelensky criticized Putin’s reluctance to negotiate, highlighting the global disappointment with Russia’s stance. He emphasized the need for international pressure on Russia to change course and end the war, suggesting that Putin’s motivations are driven by personal satisfaction and financial gains. The ongoing conflict underscores the escalating tensions and the potential for internal pressures within the Russian leadership to influence future negotiations.
