North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has pledged to expedite the development of a nuclear-capable naval fleet and disclosed plans to create undisclosed underwater weaponry in anticipation of a visit by Chinese President Xi Jinping.

During a visit to a 5,000-ton naval destroyer with his daughter, Kim emphasized the need for the swift advancement of naval forces to enhance the country’s nuclear deterrence capabilities and to strike the enemy both underwater and on the water. He also outlined a new five-year defense strategy that includes constructing larger 10,000-ton-class destroyers and developing unspecified underwater secret weapons.

While the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) did not mention any specific comments regarding the United States or South Korea during Kim’s visit, tensions persist among the three nations due to North Korea’s nuclear aspirations and stalled diplomatic relations.

The announcement of Xi’s upcoming visit to North Korea follows recent reports confirming the construction of a new uranium-enrichment facility in North Korea. This facility, along with Kim’s commitment to bolstering the country’s nuclear capabilities, is seen as an effort to solidify North Korea’s standing as a nuclear-armed state in advance of Xi’s arrival.

Kim unveiled the Kang Kon, the second destroyer revealed in the past year, following the Choe Hyon. These destroyers are equipped with various weapons systems, including anti-aircraft and anti-ship arms, as well as nuclear-capable ballistic and cruise missiles. Despite concerns raised by experts about their operational effectiveness, Kim has expressed plans to build two additional 5,000-ton-class destroyers.

The Kang Kon experienced damage during a failed launching event last year but was reportedly repaired and relaunched. However, doubts remain among outside analysts about the vessel’s full operational readiness. Kim’s ambition to expand North Korea’s naval capabilities underscores his commitment to strengthening the country’s military prowess.
