Eight motorcyclists who made a pit stop for ice cream at a picturesque location in North Wales were unexpectedly slapped with fines totaling nearly £1,000. The group, hailing from Devon, fell victim to newly installed cameras at Llyn Tegid, Bala, located in the Eryri National Park, commonly known as Snowdonia. These cameras were implemented to deter overnight camping.
Each of the bikers is facing two £60 fines after stopping twice to purchase ice creams before realizing the newly imposed parking charges, resulting in a collective penalty amount of £960. One of the bikers expressed disappointment, stating that they had been visiting the area for years without being aware of any parking fees for motorcycles in that particular spot.
Following this incident, a petition has been launched urging the Eryri National Park Authority to allow free access to the lake’s car parks. Additionally, other visitors who were fined on July 12, the day before the ANPR cameras were activated, are contesting the penalties but have reservations due to the involvement of a private operator managing the car parks.
Recent summers have seen chaotic situations on local roads in Bala due to excessive tourism, prompting an increase in parking fees and the installation of solar-powered ANPR cameras. Motorcyclists are now required to pay £1 for parking, a change from the previous free parking arrangement. While overnight parking bans at other car parks in Eryri were paused following public outcry, the bans in Bala remain in place as part of a pilot scheme.
Local residents are unhappy with the revised parking arrangements and have initiated a petition demanding greater access and expressing concerns about the enforcement model being managed by a private company. The petition has garnered significant support within the community, highlighting dissatisfaction with the current situation. ENPA has stated that the pilot scheme will continue until the end of October half-term, with a review planned to assess its effectiveness in managing parking and camping issues. The outcome of this review will influence any future decisions regarding the parking arrangements at Llyn Tegid.
