Comfortable, stylish, and breezy – these are the qualities you’d expect from a pair of trendy summer trousers. However, a pair of £25.99 trousers from Zara has gained notoriety on social media as the ‘Zara death trousers.’
Despite their cool-girl appeal, these wide-leg trousers have been linked to serious injuries such as fractured elbows, broken ribs, and cuts, according to reports from concerned shoppers.
Numerous TikTok videos have surfaced, with women cautioning others about the dangers of wearing these popular trousers. Stories range from emergency ambulance calls due to accidents during commutes to harrowing experiences of fabric entanglement in escalators at tube stations.
Intrigued by the alarming reputation of these trousers, I ventured to Zara to examine them firsthand. On the surface, they appeared like a summer wardrobe essential with their breathable fabric, loose fit, and elasticated waistband ideal for indulging at a BBQ. However, being of shorter stature at 5’3″, the excessive length of the trousers posed a significant tripping hazard.
The slippery material caused the wide legs to rub together while walking, leading to potential snags. I found myself frequently stepping on the hem, pulling the trousers down as I ascended stairs.
During a brief walk on my street, I stumbled over the excess fabric, confirming the inherent risk associated with wearing these trousers.
One shopper, 34-year-old Lauren Hunter, recounted her ordeal of sustaining suspected broken ribs while wearing the trousers. Caught by a sudden gust of wind, she tumbled onto the pavement, resulting in painful injuries.

Another shopper, Bev Finch, from Essex, underwent two surgeries and had metal fixtures inserted following a similar mishap with the trousers. A fall caused by fabric entanglement resulted in severe injuries, emphasizing the serious risks posed by these garments.
Physiotherapist Harvey Slade highlighted the prevalence of upper-body injuries from such falls, urging individuals to focus on balance and proprioception to prevent accidents. Taking precautions, such as adjusting the trouser length, can significantly reduce the likelihood of such incidents.
