“Mother’s Initiative Promotes Phone-Free Summer Fun”

Esther Ghey, a mother who lost her daughter Brianna to a tragic incident, is now advocating for children to take a break from their phones during the summer holidays. She has initiated the Phone’s Down Challenge, encouraging kids to engage in outdoor activities and socialize without the constant distraction of smartphones.

Prior to her untimely death, Brianna was heavily immersed in her phone and social media. Esther believes that this challenge serves as a reminder for everyone to be more mindful of their phone usage and offers children a chance to disconnect, enjoying the real-world experiences of summer.

In a separate incident, 16-year-old Brianna fell victim to a planned attack orchestrated through the social media app Snapchat by two 15-year-olds, Scarlett Jenkinson and Eddie Ratcliffe.

One of the participants in the challenge, 13-year-old Olivia Bell, has already deleted popular apps like TikTok, Instagram, and Roblox for a week. Olivia admitted that reducing her screen time has been challenging but rewarding, as she spent quality time with friends engaging in activities like playing football and rehearsing for a theater performance.

Research conducted by The Children’s Commissioner revealed that one in five young individuals spends more than seven hours daily on screens, leading to disruptions in sleep patterns. To address this growing concern, the government recently announced plans to implement a ban on children under 16 accessing major social media platforms by 2027. The proposed policy includes restrictions such as curfews on app usage for 16 and 17-year-olds and age limits for certain online interactions.

The Phone’s Down Challenge and the government’s proposed social media restrictions highlight the increasing need to address excessive screen time among young people and promote healthier digital habits.
