In a significant move to address unruly motorists, London-style double red lines are being implemented within a prominent national park. Derbyshire County Council has introduced this new measure to combat the “parking chaos” occurring at various popular locations in the Peak District.

The initiative comes in response to complaints from locals about day-trippers causing road obstructions by double parking and abandoning vehicles, leading to delays for emergency services. The introduction of red lines, set up ahead of the upcoming bank holiday weekend, aims to alleviate these issues for both residents and visitors.

These double red lines prohibit all vehicles, including licensed taxis and Blue Badge holders, from stopping or parking at any time. Motorists parking on verges behind the red lines or obstructing pavements will face a £70 fine, which can be reduced to £35 if paid within 14 days.

Unlike double yellow lines, where a warden typically observes a car waiting for an extended period before issuing a fine, vehicles parked on red lines can be fined immediately. While more commonly found in major London routes, similar measures have been adopted by local authorities in cities like Birmingham, Wolverhampton, and Leeds.

Councillor Charlotte Hill, the cabinet member for highways at Derbyshire County Council, mentioned that crews have started painting the red lines in Castleton and around Mam Tor in between bouts of inclement weather. She emphasized the importance of ensuring access for emergency and other services, highlighting the challenges posed by double-parked vehicles and blocked driveways.

The community response to the initiative has been mostly positive, with locals appreciating the effort but also emphasizing the need for active enforcement. The Peak District, Britain’s inaugural national park established in 1951, draws an estimated 13 to 14 million visitors annually.
