Passenger aboard a cruise ship in the midst of a suspected hantavirus outbreak has issued an emotional plea, expressing the need for safety, clarity, and a return home. The MV Hondius cruise has reported three fatalities, including a married Dutch couple and a German national, due to the rare rat-borne virus. Additionally, one British passenger, one British crew member, and a Dutch crew member have fallen ill.
The 69-year-old British passenger is currently in intensive care in Johannesburg, with both crew members experiencing respiratory symptoms of varying severity, as confirmed by Oceanwide Expeditions, the cruise operator. While hantavirus has been confirmed in the British man’s case, the cause of death in the fatalities remains unknown.
Approximately 150 individuals are stranded on the vessel, anchored off the coast of Cape Verde, as local authorities prohibit disembarkation. In a heartfelt video shared on Instagram, Jake Rosmarin, a US travel blogger, highlighted the uncertainty and emphasized the passengers’ desire for safety, clarity, and a swift return home.
The MV Hondius, sailing under the Dutch flag, embarked on its journey from Argentina three weeks ago, with planned stops in Antarctica, the Falkland Islands, and other destinations en route to Spain’s Canary Islands. Hantavirus, transmitted through contact with infected rodents’ urine, droppings, or saliva, poses a risk when disturbed and inhaled.
Official health organizations have indicated that hantavirus can cause severe respiratory and renal syndromes, with rare instances of human-to-human transmission. While no specific treatment exists, early medical intervention can enhance survival rates. The World Health Organization is actively involved in investigating the outbreak aboard the cruise ship, providing necessary medical care and conducting further testing and epidemiological studies.
