Every upstanding individual in our nation will have felt deep shock at the occurrences of this week. It is imperative that we view this as a pivotal moment. The recent disturbing events in Golders Green, where Jews were the victims of an antisemitic act of terror, are not just alarming but also not reflective of our identity.
My thoughts are with the two individuals affected by this despicable attack. I extend my hopes and prayers for their swift and complete recovery, and offer support to their families during this challenging period.
In the face of humanity’s worst aspects, we witnessed true heroism. I express immense gratitude to the Shomrim and Hatzola volunteers, local community members, and emergency responders who swiftly acted. Their bravery saved lives and prevented a more catastrophic outcome. They are, and forever will be, heroes.
Even if this incident had been isolated, it would have been disturbing. Unfortunately, it is part of a distressing pattern. Since the October 7 attacks in 2023, there has been a surge of antisemitism, leading to tragic incidents like the deadly assault on a Manchester synagogue during Yom Kippur two years later. Subsequent events on Bondi Beach and recent suspected arson attacks on Jewish establishments in London have only added to the unease.
This alarming escalation has left British Jews feeling vulnerable, fearful, and even contemplating their future in the country. It is crucial that we prevent such a scenario.
Jewish life is intertwined with our national fabric. It is a fundamental part of our identity and must be safeguarded from harm.
The government has taken steps by allocating an additional £25 million for specialized police operations to detect and prevent attacks, along with enhancing security at synagogues, schools, and other key locations. This increased funding brings our total commitment to £58 million, the most significant investment of its kind in our nation’s history.
While these measures are important, they are not sufficient. No individual should have to lead a restricted Jewish life behind heightened security measures. In addition to bolstered security, we must address external influences that pose threats to our citizens.
Efforts are already underway, including placing Iran on an enhanced tier of the Foreign Influence Registration Scheme and imposing sanctions on numerous Iranian entities and individuals, including the entire IRGC.
Further actions are in progress. Legislation will be expedited to combat hostile activities on British soil, empowering the Home Secretary to address organizations backed by foreign states that jeopardize national security.
Through a new social cohesion strategy, the government is expanding the visa taskforce to prevent extremists from entering the UK. Efforts to counter domestic extremism are also being intensified.
Maintaining public order is a priority. While the right to protest is respected, it must not be a platform for spreading antisemitism or hatred. The Home Secretary has strengthened police powers regarding repeat protests and commissioned a review to enhance public order laws.
To eradicate antisemitism, we must tackle its underlying causes and the permissive environment that allows it to persist. Our public institutions must lead by example more than ever before.
Initiatives are underway to eliminate antisemitism from the NHS through mandatory training and a review led by Lord John Mann. Additionally, £7 million has been allocated to combat antisemitism in educational institutions.
Antisemitism is a deeply rooted societal evil that demands a unified national effort focused on tangible actions involving all members of our society.
Together, we must stand in solidarity with the Jewish community, oppose hatred wherever it appears, and ensure the safety of British Jews as a measure of our nation’s character and values.
