Two individuals have lost their lives, and multiple others have sustained injuries following a vehicle crashing into a crowd in Leipzig, Germany’s eastern city center. Emergency services, including ambulances, police vehicles, fire trucks, and a helicopter, swiftly responded to the incident on Grimmaische Street, a popular shopping area connecting various landmarks to Leipzig’s market square.
Authorities are yet to disclose further information, labeling the situation as “dynamic.” The state police of Saxony, Germany, have apprehended the suspect and assured the public that there is no ongoing threat.
Expressing shock, Leipzig Mayor Burkhard Jung conveyed solidarity with the victims’ families, confirming the fatalities. Mayor Jung emphasized that the police and investigative bodies would handle further inquiries.
Reportedly, a damaged Volkswagen SUV with a person atop it was observed speeding through a pedestrian zone, causing at least eight injuries, as per local sources. Witnesses described a driver traveling at high speed along Grimmaische Street.
A police spokesperson acknowledged that multiple people were hurt as a vehicle traversed the city center. Around ten ambulances are present at the scene, with shops in the affected pedestrian area shuttered.
