A widely known brand of baby food has been withdrawn from 1,500 stores after police discovered rat poison in a sample. Jars of HiPP baby food containing carrots and potatoes were removed from Spar supermarkets in Austria due to concerns about potential contamination. The company indicated that the jars may have been tampered with, posing a severe risk to consumers.
HiPP, a German company, stated that there is a possibility of a harmful substance being introduced through external interference. As a precautionary measure, the entire product range, not limited to carrot and potato jars, was taken off the shelves. The company clarified that the issue was isolated to products distributed in Austria.
In a recent development, police confirmed the presence of rat poison in a sample of the product. A customer-reported sample from a 190-gram jar tested positive for the toxic substance in Burgenland. Additionally, similar jars have been confiscated in the Czech Republic and Slovakia, with initial tests indicating the presence of a toxic additive and a foul smell from tampered jars.
Authorities cautioned the public to watch out for certain signs that may indicate tampering, such as a red circle sticker on the bottom, an opened or damaged lid, a missing safety seal, or an unusual smell. Investigations are ongoing, with the Burgenland State Criminal Police Office collaborating with the Federal Criminal Police Office to address the situation. Vigilance is encouraged, and any suspicious findings should be reported promptly.
