A 70-year-old woman, described as a close neighbor of a British mother-of-four, Karen Carter, who was fatally stabbed in her home in France, has been formally charged with her murder. The incident occurred in April 2025 in the village of Trémolat, Dordogne.
According to Jacques-Édouard Andrault, the state prosecutor in Périgueux, the suspect is currently in custody under suspicion of premeditated murder, which carries a potential life sentence. Allegations suggest that the victim, Karen Carter, was involved in a love-related dispute as she was in the process of divorcing her husband and romantically linked to a retired executive, Jean-François Guerrier.
Subsequently, tensions arose among individuals including Marie-Laure Autefort, a 70-year-old neighbor. Following the murder, both Guerrier and Autefort were briefly detained but released without charges. Autefort’s brother, Philippe Monribot, acknowledged his sister’s unrequited love for Guerrier but refuted any involvement in the crime.
Guerrier, who hosted a wine tasting event on the day of the incident, discovered Carter’s body at her residence after she failed to contact him upon arrival. He then alerted authorities and later implicated Autefort, citing her infatuation with him as a motive for the crime.
Despite providing alibis and denying any wrongdoing, Autefort and Guerrier, along with other individuals, submitted DNA samples to the police for investigation. None of the samples matched the forensic evidence found at the crime scene.
The prosecutor confirmed the murder suspect’s arrest on April 30, coinciding with Autefort’s detainment. The accused, a resident of Trémolat, was officially charged with premeditated murder on July 2 and is currently under judicial supervision due to her age.
While authorities continue their inquiries, Karen Carter’s family, represented by their lawyer Reda Hammouche, expressed a belief in the potential perpetrator. The family’s suspicions are based on a thorough review of the case details discussed privately with their legal counsel.
Hammouche emphasized ongoing investigative efforts and the family’s hope for justice to prevail in identifying and prosecuting the individual responsible for Karen Carter’s tragic death.
