King Charles and Queen Camilla made a spectacular entrance at the opening ceremony of the 2026 Glasgow Commonwealth Games. Their arrival from the iconic Doctor Who Tardis, a time-traveling machine, was met with enthusiastic cheers at the Hydro stadium in Glasgow. The Tardis, inspired by a police box design, journeyed through space and time, showcasing famous Scottish landmarks like Loch Ness, Edinburgh Castle, The Kelpies, and the Highlands during different eras.
The ceremony commenced with a nature-themed display, highlighting Scotland’s diverse landscapes and paying homage to Glasgow’s historical Garden Festival of 1988. The Tardis, which symbolizes Time And Relative Dimension In Space, flew over the University of Glasgow, the alma mater of the TV Doctor. The time-traveling adventure was playfully guided by Sir Chris Hoy and actor Greg McHugh, much to the amusement of Sylvester McCoy, the Seventh Doctor.
Traveling across Scotland, the Tardis concluded its journey at Balmoral Castle, the Royal Family’s residence in the Highlands, where the Games will unfold in various venues. King Charles, in his address, emphasized the significance of the Commonwealth family and the shared commitment to combat plastic pollution in oceans. He expressed gratitude to Glasgow for hosting the event and declared the commencement of the games.
With 3,000 athletes from 74 nations, supported by volunteers and fans, the Hydro stadium will host both the opening and closing ceremonies. The event will feature 10 sports, a reduction from the previous Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. Scotland’s First Minister, John Swinney, anticipated a remarkable opening ceremony in the presence of the royal guests.
