A widespread power outage has plunged Georgia into darkness, affecting major cities like Tbilisi, Rustavi, and Batumi. Reports of power cuts started coming in shortly after midnight local time.
The extent of the disruption is still uncertain as Georgian authorities are yet to issue a formal statement. However, local media have cited Electrosystem, the country’s electricity operator, as attributing the outage to the disconnection of a power line connecting the Georgian and Turkish electricity networks.
As a result, many parts of the country are facing limited power supply, with even prominent landmarks like the Tbilisi TV Tower going dark, as reported by internet users.
Residents took to social media platforms to share their experiences, with one Reddit user in the r/Tbilisi subreddit expressing concern about the widespread electricity outage affecting the entire city.
Another user highlighted the extensive reach of the outage, mentioning that even the Andza radio tower was without power. The TV broadcasting tower, a well-known local landmark, stands tall at 277.5 meters on Mtatsminda Mountain in Tbilisi.
Georgia, located on the Black Sea coast in the Caucasus region near the Russian border, is home to approximately 3.8 to 3.9 million people. Tbilisi alone houses about one-third of the country’s population.
The exact cause of the power line disconnection leading to the outage is still unknown.
