To combat the heatwave, individuals are advised to refrain from outdoor exercise and excessive alcohol consumption. Craig Harman, the chief operating officer, emphasized the importance of staying hydrated, avoiding the hottest times of the day, and reconsidering outdoor physical activities to prevent heat-related issues.
As the nation braces for England’s upcoming World Cup match, the public is encouraged to consume ample water, especially if consuming alcohol. The warning follows a day of extreme heat, with Somerset experiencing its hottest June day on record at 36.7C. The LAS reported a significant surge in emergency calls, including a notable increase in cardiac arrests.
The heatwave, driven by a “heat-dome,” has led to widespread disruptions across the UK, with closures of schools and nurseries, hospitals declaring critical incidents, and travel advisories for rail passengers due to the strain on services. Tragic incidents, such as a drowning in Wales and ongoing wildfires in Derbyshire, have been linked to the soaring temperatures.
The escalation of heatwaves is attributed to human-induced climate change, primarily stemming from fossil fuel consumption. The Met Office has extended its red heat warning for London and parts of southern and eastern England, with amber and yellow warnings in effect elsewhere. Eastern England is forecasted to experience peak temperatures on Friday before cooler weather arrives over the weekend.
