A human rights activist with personal experience in Dubai’s prison system has expressed concerns about a British woman facing the death penalty for allegedly stabbing a man to death in the city. Brooke George, 23, from Gravesend, Kent, has been charged with premeditated murder after the incident. George claims she acted in self-defence due to ongoing domestic abuse by the man she met online.

Her family asserts that she had planned to return home but was prevented from doing so by the man. They allege that he physically assaulted her when she demanded her passport, leading her to defend herself with a kitchen knife. George reported being mistreated during her arrest, including being forced to strip in front of male officers without female presence, causing her distress.

David Haigh, a British activist who had his own legal troubles in Dubai, highlighted the challenges George may face in proving self-defence in the UAE’s justice system. He criticized the lack of basic human rights protections and the potential for coerced statements due to language barriers faced by foreign detainees.

While acknowledging the possibility of a death penalty under UAE law, Haigh noted that such sentences for Western nationals are rare. He urged a thorough investigation into George’s abuse claims, emphasizing the need for medical evidence, witness statements, and a fair assessment of the relationship history.

Haigh expressed concerns about the treatment of women in Dubai’s prisons, citing potential isolation, lack of translation services, and poor living conditions. He advised George’s family to seek legal support cautiously and called on the Foreign Office to provide more assistance to British nationals facing serious charges abroad.

The case has drawn international attention, with allegations of mistreatment by Dubai authorities. Haigh underscored the disparity between Dubai’s glamorous image and the harsh reality experienced by some foreign detainees, emphasizing the need for transparency and fair treatment within the justice system.

George’s family described her arrest as a harrowing experience, with her mother expressing deep concern for her well-being. The Foreign Office confirmed their engagement with the case and support for George’s family and cooperation with local authorities.

The situation highlights the complexities and challenges faced by individuals involved in legal matters in foreign jurisdictions, emphasizing the importance of fair treatment, legal representation, and diplomatic support in such cases.
