A Saudi physician has been handed a life sentence for crashing a rented BMW into a Christmas market in Germany, resulting in the deaths of six individuals.
Taleb al-Abdulmohsen, aged 51, stood trial at the state court in November following the incident on December 20, 2024, in Magdeburg, Germany. The attack led to the tragic deaths of five women and a young boy, in addition to numerous injuries.
The event lasted slightly over a minute and was executed using a rented BMW X3, which accelerated to speeds of up to 30mph during the violence. The court determined that the 51-year-old bore a “particularly serious” level of responsibility, as reported by the German news agency dpa.
His life sentence implies that he will not be eligible for parole after the typical 15-year period in Germany. Investigators confirmed that al-Abdulmohsen was not intoxicated at the time of the incident.
Authorities noted that his actions appeared to stem from dissatisfaction with the outcome of a legal conflict and the failure of multiple criminal complaints. The accused also orchestrated the attack without any collaborators.
Officials mentioned that the suspect did not match the typical profile of extremists perpetrating attacks. He identified himself as a former Muslim critical of Islam and publicly endorsed far-right views on social media.
While al-Abdulmohsen had no prior record of violence, he had come to the attention of authorities in the past due to threatening behavior. The Magdeburg incident was part of a string of assaults involving immigrants, which brought migration to the forefront of Germany’s national election campaign in February 2025.
The defendant arrived in Germany in 2006 and had been granted permanent residency.
