More than 100 millionaires residing in the UK, among them ex-Match of the Day host Gary Lineker, have endorsed a letter urging the new Prime Minister, Andy Burnham, to levy taxes on their wealth. Organized by the group Patriotic Millionaires UK, the letter states, “We want you to tax us. We can afford it. We’re not talking about higher taxes on those who earn their income through daily work, but on the wealthiest individuals who derive their income from their accumulated wealth.”

The proposal suggests an annual 2% tax on wealth exceeding £10 million, potentially affecting around 20,000 individuals in the UK, which constitutes less than 0.04% of the population. Other proposals include a one-off “emergency” 1% wealth tax on assets exceeding £4 million, estimated to generate about £25 billion annually to support pay increases for public sector workers and address NHS vacancies.

Furthermore, the Green Party has proposed a wealth tax of 1% annually on assets over £10 million and 2% on assets exceeding £1 billion, alongside advocating for reforms in capital gains tax to align rates with taxable gains. Advocates of a 2% wealth tax on assets above £10 million also support the overhaul of capital gains tax, projecting an additional £12 billion in revenue.

Addressing concerns about the implementation of a wealth tax, Tax Justice UK has suggested a self-declaration of asset values by taxpayers, supported by a compliance team at HMRC, to enhance transparency and counter illicit financial activities. Proponents of the proposal estimate potential revenues of £24 billion, emphasizing the impact it could have on public spending priorities such as defense and healthcare.

The feasibility of a wealth tax is a subject of debate, with critics highlighting challenges in accurately assessing the assets of the super-rich and potential tax avoidance strategies. Concerns also exist regarding the possibility of wealthy individuals relocating abroad to evade taxes, with examples from Europe showing varying experiences with wealth taxes in countries like Spain, Norway, and Switzerland.

Despite differing opinions on the effectiveness and implications of a wealth tax, public support for such measures remains high, as demonstrated by a YouGov survey indicating 75% approval for a 2% wealth tax on assets above £10 million. The spotlight now turns to Andy Burnham and new Chancellor John Healey, with Burnham acknowledging the need for potential tax adjustments while emphasizing a focus on unity over division in policymaking decisions.
