A tragic incident unfolded as a 12-year-old child lost their life while struggling in the waters off a Spanish island’s coast.
The emergency response was activated on Tuesday, July 21, at approximately 1:36 pm following distress calls regarding two individuals in trouble at La Laja Beach in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. Multiple emergency units, including ambulances, a rescue helicopter, and various support teams such as the Spanish Red Cross, Maritime Rescue, Civil Guard, and police, swiftly mobilized to the scene.
Upon arrival, the Red Cross beach rescue team successfully rescued an 11-year-old child from the sea. The minor was then transported to the University Maternal and Child Hospital of the Canary Islands for medical attention. Details about the injuries sustained were not disclosed, and no updates on the child’s condition have been provided so far.
A comprehensive search operation by land, sea, and air was launched to locate the second missing minor. Tragically, the body was found in the water and later transferred to the San Cristóbal dock by a Civil Guard vessel.
Authorities from the National Police have initiated an investigation into the incident.
La Laja beach, situated in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, is one of four beaches in the area. It is predominantly frequented by locals from Gran Canaria rather than tourists.
In a separate incident, a mother and her daughter lost their lives on West Mersea beach in Essex. Essex Police confirmed the tragic deaths of Shelina Rahman, 41, and her daughter Samiha, 15, after encountering difficulties in the water on Mersea Island. The duo had tried to rescue Samiha’s seven-year-old cousin, but they were swept away by the high tide. Despite the brave efforts of beach teenagers, Shelina and Samiha were pronounced dead at the scene, while the young boy is currently receiving medical treatment.
