During his upcoming discussions with Scotland’s First Minister John Swinney and Welsh FM Rhun ap Iorwerth, Burnham emphasized his commitment to practical improvements rather than engaging in divisive discussions about constitutional matters. The move follows Labour’s significant losses in Wales and Scotland, where Plaid Cymru and the SNP made considerable gains, respectively.
Expressing his dedication to fostering growth in all parts of the UK, Burnham emphasized the importance of supporting households through initiatives like removing VAT from electricity bills. His upcoming itinerary includes meetings with leaders in Northern Ireland and visits to areas where Labour has faced challenges, such as Port Talbot and Aberdeen.
As Burnham continues to shape his leadership team, it is anticipated that Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar will join the Department for Business, Innovation, Science, and Trade. Sarwar, a prominent figure who called for Keir Starmer’s resignation earlier in the year, is expected to transition to a peerage to contribute to the new administration’s agenda.
