Food prices have increased for the first time in a year, with certain items more than doubling in cost, as per research conducted by consumer group Which?. The study monitors over 27,000 prices monthly across major supermarkets in the UK. Data shows that overall grocery inflation rose from 2.4% in May to 2.6% in June, marking the first uptick since May of the previous year.

Specific products have seen notable price surges. For instance, Asda’s Just Essentials Mild Cheddar Slices (200g) allegedly saw a price surge of 113%, going from an average of 65p to £1.39 over a year. Sainsbury’s Snack Pork Pies (two x 130g) increased by 92%, from 91p to £1.75, while Tesco’s Ms Molly’s Iced Fairy Cakes 12 Pack rose by 66%, from £1.20 to £1.99.

The data also indicates that Tesco experienced the highest inflation in June at 4.1%, up from 2.9% in May. Sainsbury’s followed with a 3.9% increase in prices. However, these figures do not consider loyalty discounts offered through Tesco’s Clubcard scheme and Sainsbury’s Nectar.

While overall inflation levels are below previous peaks, consumers seeking to save on grocery bills still face significant price challenges. Experts warn that food inflation may continue to rise in the coming weeks due to ongoing impacts from the Middle East conflict and higher crude oil prices.

In response to the findings, retailers like Tesco, Sainsbury’s, and Asda have issued statements emphasizing their commitment to providing value to customers amidst rising costs. With households experiencing a cost of living squeeze and limited wage growth, the affordability of essential items remains a critical concern.
