Britons planning a trip to popular European destinations could encounter an unprecedented heatwave on the continent in the upcoming days. Temperatures have already soared into the mid-40s in regions of Spain, France, and Italy. The UK is also experiencing its third heatwave of 2026.
According to the GFS weather model, Europe is expected to see temperatures well above the seasonal average next week. Southern Spain may reach highs of 44C on Thursday, with Catalonia and Sicily also experiencing scorching temperatures. Friday is anticipated to be even hotter, potentially setting record temperatures in southern Spain, with Andalusia expected to reach 48C.
Tourist hotspots like Seville could see temperatures of 46C or 47C, as per the GFS model. This follows tragic wildfires in southern Spain that resulted in 13 fatalities, including seven British citizens. Spain has issued various weather warnings, including orange alerts for Almería and yellow alerts for several other regions.
Warnings are also in place in Aragon, with Zaragoza under an orange alert due to high temperatures. The Balearic Islands and Murcia in the south-east are also under heightened vigilance. Experts caution that temperatures in Europe could soon hit 50C, with Professor Bill McGuire from UCL suggesting this could occur due to the impact of El Niño.
