The US government has expressed opposition to a proposed ban on Argentina players following a FIFA investigation into the display of a banner referencing the Falkland Islands. Calls for punitive measures against Argentina arose after they unfurled a banner stating “The Falklands are Argentine” after defeating England in the semi-finals.
Prior to the match, it was specified that flags featuring messages related to the Islands would not be allowed in the stadium. FIFA has stated that they are currently reviewing the match reports before making any decisions on potential disciplinary actions.
The UK Government has called for an inquiry, emphasizing that while the World Cup may not belong to them, the Falkland Islands do. They reiterated their stance that self-determination lies with the islanders and their commitment to the Falklands remains steadfast.
In a letter to FIFA, Liberal Democrat leader Ed Davey urged for the suspension of players carrying the flag for the upcoming final against Spain. However, the White House seems to hold a different perspective. According to Sky News, officials from President Donald Trump’s administration have rejected calls from the UK government to penalize the players involved.
Andrew Giuliani, Trump’s World Cup chief and son of former New York mayor Rudy Giuliani, has defended Argentina’s actions as an exercise of freedom of expression, citing the First Amendment of the US Constitution. Nonetheless, he acknowledged that FIFA regulations could still result in sanctions for the team.
This incident is not the first time Argentina has made references to the Falkland Islands, as they previously chanted slogans about the British overseas territory after a victory over Egypt in the round of 16. FIFA has a history of punishing Argentina for political statements linked to the Falklands, having fined the nation’s football association £20,000 in 2014 for a similar banner at a friendly game against Slovenia.
In a separate incident, FIFA banned Spanish players Alvaro Morata and Rodri for one match after they chanted “Gibraltar is Spanish” during celebrations for Euro 2024.
