Buckingham School in Buckinghamshire, for instance, will be shut on Wednesday and Thursday, with students urged to engage in online learning due to inadequate cooling and limited shade on campus.
This heatwave coincides with the 50th anniversary of a historic heatwave that led to water shortages, failed harvests, and increased food prices. Professor Stephen Belcher, the Met Office’s chief scientist, emphasized the increasing frequency and intensity of UK heatwaves. A red weather warning for extreme heat spanning from London to Swansea and Somerset to Birmingham has been issued.
