Millions of retired individuals may soon see income tax deductions automatically taken from their state pension payments before receiving them, as per recent discussions of new proposals. The suggested approach involves applying a 20% tax rate when state pension amounts exceed the tax-free threshold, which is expected to happen next year when the state pension surpasses £12,570.

According to information from The Telegraph, no final decisions have been made regarding the implementation of this policy, with the proposals being part of a study commissioned by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP).

This development follows an earlier confirmation by Chancellor Rachel Reeves that individuals relying solely on the state pension for income would be exempt from paying income tax. As part of the proposed changes, individuals with no other earnings apart from the state pension might be eligible for tax refunds at the end of the fiscal year.

The state pension undergoes annual increases in April in accordance with the triple lock mechanism. This mechanism ensures that the state pension rises by the highest of the earnings growth between May to July, inflation in September, or a minimum of 2.5%.

Currently, the full new state pension amounts to £241.30 per week (£12,547.60 annually), while the old basic state pension stands at £184.90 per week (£9,614.80 annually).

In recent statements, Makerfield MP Andy Burnham, a potential future Prime Minister, expressed commitment to maintaining the state pension triple lock, emphasizing the potential negative consequences of deviating from this manifesto pledge. Burnham also hinted at the possibility of revisiting the frozen income tax personal allowance until April 2031.

A government spokesperson clarified to The Telegraph that there have been no alterations to the tax treatment of the state pension, highlighting that ongoing research aims to enhance understanding of pensioners’ interactions with the tax system. The Mirror has reached out to the DWP for further comments.
