A father tragically bled to death on a bench after inadvertently falling asleep and being stabbed by a knife he had in his backpack. The incident involving Robert Brown, aged 57, led to a significant murder investigation in Northampton following his discovery slumped on a bench by a canal footpath. His body was found by a passing cyclist who noticed blood seeping through the bench.
The discovery, made on August 1 last year at around 6:30 am, prompted a large police response amid suspicions of foul play. Despite initial arrests on suspicion of murder and extensive searches, all individuals were later released without charges.
An inquest revealed that Mr. Brown’s death was likely due to an accidental occurrence. It was suggested that he rolled onto the knife in his backpack while in a deep sleep, causing the blade to penetrate the bag and his coat, resulting in a severe arm wound and fatal blood loss.
Following further investigation, authorities dropped the murder probe, determining that the injury was likely self-inflicted unintentionally. The Northamptonshire senior coroner labeled the case as a “tragic accident.”
Detective Chief Inspector Torie Harrison of Northamptonshire Police initially considered various scenarios, including foul play, accidental death, or self-harm. The inquest disclosed that Mr. Brown, who battled alcohol addiction, sustained a slash wound that fortunately missed any major arteries.
The police report indicated that the knife causing the injury belonged to Mr. Brown, as evidenced by matching fibers on the blade with layers of his coat and the presence of his DNA. Authorities found no motive for murder and believed Mr. Brown’s death to be a “tragic accidental” event.
A post-mortem examination confirmed the cause of death as acute blood loss from a wound on his left upper arm. Family members, including his children and partner, paid heartfelt tributes, describing Mr. Brown as a beloved, fun-loving individual with a generous spirit and infectious laughter.
The inquest concluded with a verdict of accidental death, bringing closure to the investigation into the tragic incident.
