Some homeowners have been instructed by councils to remove their air conditioning units due to concerns about their impact on the environment. Planning officials have stated that these units release excessive carbon dioxide and should only be used as a last resort, such as when alternative methods like opening windows are ineffective.

This action follows a recorded high temperature of 36.7 degrees Celsius in Merryfield, Somerset, setting a new June record. Reports from The Telegraph highlighted a case in North London where a resident was compelled to uninstall two air-con units from their property.

In a specific instance, a resident in a North London flat was advised to cool their home naturally by opening windows and balcony doors. Generally, installing air conditioning in homes does not require planning permission, except for flats or listed buildings, with less than 5% of UK households estimated to have air conditioning.

Another resident was initially instructed to remove three units but later won an appeal due to eco-friendly enhancements like solar panels on the property. A spokesperson from Camden council emphasized their focus on simpler, energy-efficient methods for cooling homes.

The spokesperson added that residents seeking approval for air conditioning installations must show that eco-friendly alternatives are impractical and that the units will not disturb neighbors. Enforcement actions are considered a last resort if these guidelines are not followed.

The Telegraph also reported that other London councils are adopting similar regulations. The Mayor of London’s office clarified that local planning decisions are under borough jurisdiction, with policies in place to address overheating risks in new developments through shading, ventilation, and other cooling features.

Government representatives emphasized that air conditioning units are not prohibited and can be installed in both existing and new homes. They expect councils to apply rules sensibly to balance community interests and environmental concerns effectively.
