Shark activity has prompted the closure of popular beaches in Australia, urging swimmers to avoid the water. The discovery of a large whale carcass in Era, located in Sydney’s Royal National Park, led to sharks congregating in the area. Drones were deployed to monitor the sea for potential threats, resulting in the temporary closure of beaches from Garie to Burning Palms, including Wattamolla and Era.

The decomposed whale carcass was initially sighted by lifeguards on a rocky ledge, leading to increased shark presence in the vicinity following an aerial inspection. Surf Life Saving NSW CEO Stephen Pearce emphasized the danger, advising people to refrain from entering the water due to the presence of large sharks, particularly white and bull sharks.

Although the whale species remains unidentified, the decaying carcass has been present for some time, prompting collaboration between Surf Life Saving and the National Parks and Wildlife Service to maintain beach closures. With an Australian bank holiday attracting more visitors to the beaches, heightened vigilance is required to address the situation.

Recent shark incidents in Australia, including a fatal attack on a 12-year-old in January and a helicopter rescue of divers from a massive great white shark in February, have raised concerns about water safety. The harrowing episode saw a 14ft shark approaching divers before intervention from a helicopter crew averted a potential disaster.
