Kamala Harris has officially acknowledged today that she is contemplating running for President again. This confirmation came during a discussion about her future plans with TV host Rev Al Sharpton at a civil rights convention.
In response to the question, she stated, “I might. I’m thinking about it. But let me also say this. I served for four years as a heartbeat away from the Presidency of the United States. I spent numerous hours in my West Wing office just steps away from the Oval Office. I also spent extensive time in the Oval Office and the Situation Room.”
Expressing her familiarity with the responsibilities of the job, she added, “I know what the job entails. I have been traveling across the country over the past year, and one thing I am certain about is that the current status quo is ineffective and has failed many people for a significant period.”
This statement marks her strongest indication yet of a potential bid for the Democratic candidacy in the 2028 Presidential election. Despite her defeat in the 2024 election to Donald Trump after stepping in for former President Joe Biden late in the campaign, Harris remains a leading contender in national polls among Democratic candidates. She consistently outperforms California Governor Gavin Newsom by more than seven points in the average of polls.
Hinting at a possible third run for the presidency, Harris remarked in an interview with the BBC’s Laura Kuenssberg last year, stating, “I am not done. I have dedicated my entire career to a life of service, and it is ingrained in me.”
