A Morrisons store manager, Sean Egan, expressed gratitude towards the community members who rallied in support of him after he was fired for confronting a shoplifter. Egan, who had been with the supermarket chain for almost three decades, was let go for trying to prevent a habitual shoplifter from leaving the store in Aldridge, near Walsall.

The dismissal sparked a demonstration outside the supermarket, with locals demanding Egan be reinstated. During the protest, Egan acknowledged the unwavering support he received from the community since the beginning.

The incident unfolded when Egan engaged in a physical altercation with the shoplifter, Daniel Kendall, who turned aggressive and spat at Egan inside the Morrisons store. Despite initially adhering to Morrisons’ deter-and-not-detain policy, Egan’s actions led to his termination following a disciplinary hearing.

In response, residents of Aldridge organized a peaceful protest outside the store, urging Morrisons to reconsider their decision and reinstate Egan. A GoFundMe campaign initiated by loyal customers has already raised over £12,000 to assist Egan in his legal battle against the chain.

Egan, in a video from the demonstration, expressed his gratitude for the community’s support and praised the unique nature of the Aldridge area and its patrons. He emphasized the importance of fairness and loyalty in the ongoing dispute with Morrisons.

Morrisons, on the other hand, emphasized their commitment to ensuring the safety of their staff and customers, citing strict protocols in place to handle incidents like shoplifting with the goal of safeguarding everyone involved. The Mirror has reached out to Morrisons for further comments on the matter.
