The Princess of Wales shared a heartfelt moment with George Cross recipient Tony Gledhill during the royal family’s gathering to honor Queen Elizabeth II’s 100th birthday. Gledhill, 88, who received the prestigious award for apprehending armed criminals in 1966, expressed joy as he interacted with the future queen. Following the event, the retired Metropolitan Police officer revealed that his late wife had urged him to attend the palace celebration before her passing. Gledhill praised the princess, describing her as “fantastic.”

The commemoration began with the King leading tributes to his late mother’s centenary, celebrating her life and enduring impact. Charles personally presented special cards to attendees, signed by himself and Queen Camilla, and participated in cutting a cake shared among 190 guests at Buckingham Palace. The royal family, including the Prince and Princess of Wales, the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh, the Princess Royal, the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester, the Duke of Kent, and Princess Alexandra, joined in the festivities.

A special portrait session brought the royal family together after the event to honor Queen Elizabeth II’s legacy on her birthday, with representatives from 45 patronages she supported, such as Cancer Research UK and the British Red Cross Society. Earlier in the day, a prerecorded message from the King at Balmoral paid tribute to the late queen, reflecting on her profound impact on the world.

The palace’s Marble Hall was transformed into a festive setting reminiscent of a street party, adorned with bunting and historical paintings. Guests enjoyed champagne and a special cocktail in honor of Queen Elizabeth II. Portraits showcasing the monarch’s visits to various charities were displayed, accompanied by lively tunes from the Band of the Household Cavalry. Notable highlights included Queen Elizabeth II roses and a Paddington Bear, adding to the celebratory atmosphere.

During the event, the King and Queen engaged with attendees, including centenarians like Mary Wood and Joan Hollingworth. The royal family warmly interacted with the guests, sharing stories and laughter. Prince William playfully joked with Joan Hollingworth about her age, while Joan expressed her joy at sharing a birthday with the late queen. Princess Anne inaugurated the Queen Elizabeth II Garden in Regent’s Park, emphasizing her mother’s enduring legacy and the importance of remembrance.

Additionally, the royal family visited the British Museum to review designs for a memorial dedicated to Queen Elizabeth II, with architect Lord Foster explaining the concept behind the monument. The proposed design, inspired by the park’s original layout, will feature a bronze statue of the late monarch and Prince Philip. Charles praised the design, marking it as “fantastic” during the presentation.
