I am honored to serve as the new Minister for Women and Equalities in the government led by Andy Burnham. This role, dedicated solely to women’s rights and equalities, underscores the significance this Labour government places on these issues.
We are facing a critical juncture, with conservative politicians seeking to erode the hard-fought rights of women, and online discussions descending into negativity, promoting a future that does not align with British values.
I am determined to counter this trend and drive the country forward in my new capacity. Whether it involves reducing child poverty, combatting violence against women and girls, or advocating for pay equity, I am fully committed to these causes.
Recently, I had the opportunity to visit a rape crisis center, where dedicated staff support women in finding safety, security, and healing from deep-seated trauma. Upholding our manifesto pledge to reduce violence against women and girls will be a central focus of my work.
My dedication to these issues is personal; prior to my political career, I managed a shelter for women and children escaping abuse. I witnessed firsthand that rights are not abstract concepts but tangible safeguards that impact people’s daily lives, such as a woman’s ability to walk home safely at night or ensuring fair pay for equal work.
As a representative of the labor movement in Parliament, it is the responsibility of the Labour Party to secure and advance these rights, which we have done through legislation like the Equal Pay Act 1970 and the Equality Act 2010. Unfortunately, there are voices, like Nigel Farage’s, calling for the repeal of these laws, jeopardizing protections for women, minorities, and disabled individuals.
I will not shy away from confronting such challenges. Equality laws safeguard essential rights, including maternity benefits, disability accommodations, and protections against discrimination based on various factors like religious beliefs and sexual orientation.
In my role as Minister for Women and Equalities, I am committed to preventing any regression in these rights and will strive to enhance them further. Additionally, as the newly appointed Chair of the Labour Party, I aim to engage with people nationwide, including readers, to understand their expectations from the government.
My journey with the Labour Party began in my youth, witnessing the impact of Labour’s policies in improving the quality of life in regions like the North East. I am dedicated to revitalizing the party and recently achieved success in the Greater Manchester elections.
While we face formidable challenges, I am determined to collaborate with party members and unions to build a winning strategy that counters divisive politics and secures another term for Labour.
Andy Burnham’s leadership as Prime Minister is commendable, showing courage in challenging the status quo and instilling hope in many. Labour’s vision is to defy the notion of inevitable national decline, addressing issues like homelessness, public transport affordability, and social care complexities.
Labour’s initiatives, such as reducing VAT on children’s activities and meals, aim to alleviate financial pressures on families during the summer holidays. Furthermore, upcoming measures, like lowering uniform costs and expanding access to free school meals, demonstrate our commitment to enhancing opportunities for children.
