During the funeral of a teenager who tragically drowned over the weekend, mourners were touched by the heartfelt speeches given by her family, who remembered her as a girl who always carried a smile.
A large gathering assembled at the Church of The Holy Spirit in Ballymun, north Dublin, to bid farewell to Abbie Carmody-Pepper after the recent incident that claimed her life. The 15-year-old encountered difficulties and drowned at Burrow Beach while marking the end of Transition Year and the beginning of summer.
Abbie’s family, including her parents Mandy and Wayne, along with her brothers Leon and Warren, shared moving memories about her. Sadly, Abbie is one of twelve individuals in the UK and Ireland who lost their lives due to water-related incidents following a warm Bank Holiday weekend.
In a touching eulogy on behalf of his mother Mandy, Aaron expressed gratitude for the time spent with Abbie over the past 15 years. He reminisced about her cheerful demeanor and acknowledged her new angelic presence. Wayne, in his tribute, thanked everyone for their support and highlighted Abbie’s spirited nature and their special bond.
The family recalled cherished moments with Abbie, reflecting on her infectious smile that brightened every day, regardless of circumstances. They also remembered her unique interests and her brave attempt to save a friend during the tragic incident.
Musical tributes, including songs like “Forever Young” by Alphaville and “How Long Will I Love You” by Ellie Goulding, were played at the service, honoring Abbie’s memory. Personal items symbolizing her life, such as lip gloss and her favorite sweets, were chosen to commemorate her.
Following the church ceremony, Abbie was laid to rest at Dardistown Cemetery. The family continues to grapple with the profound grief caused by the tragic loss, as expressed by Abbie’s aunt Joanne earlier in the week.
