Britain is seeking to draw insights from the Netherlands in addressing the ‘Neets’ crisis, as the Netherlands boasts the lowest rates in Europe. Labour minister Pat McFadden revealed plans to visit the Netherlands following a report warning of a potential “lost generation” in the UK.

In the Netherlands, only 5.3% of young people aged 15 to 24 are classified as Neets, which is approximately one-third of the rate in the UK. Recent data showed that over 1 million young individuals in the UK are currently out of employment, education, or training, marking a 15.8% Neet rate, the highest in more than a decade.

McFadden highlighted the importance of studying the strategies employed by countries like the Netherlands, emphasizing the need for a structured approach offering various alternatives such as training, work experience, or education to prevent young people from becoming disengaged after leaving school.

According to the Resolution Foundation, aligning the UK’s Neet rate with that of the Netherlands could potentially reduce the number of unemployed young people by 600,000. The report also underscored the long-standing success of the Netherlands’ youth guarantee schemes compared to the UK’s temporary responses to youth disengagement.

Additionally, McFadden reiterated the government’s commitment to eliminating age-related wage disparities, though specifics on the timeline for implementation remained pending Low Pay Commission guidance. The government’s focus on rewarding individuals fairly for their work was emphasized, aligning with Labour Party principles.

Meanwhile, the Department for Work and Pensions announced an expansion of work experience opportunities, with hundreds of thousands of new placements supported by major employers like Gatwick airport. The initiative aims to provide employment prospects for individuals like Beth Owen, who expressed optimism after attending an interview for a duty-free position at Gatwick following a challenging 10-month job search.
