Andy Burnham, anticipated Prime Minister, has been formulating plans for his tenure in Downing Street for over a year, according to his close associate Louise Haigh.

Haigh, a key ally, revealed that Burnham, the former Transport Secretary and potential key figure in his administration, has a detailed strategy for his initial 100 days as the leader of the UK.

The path to power for Burnham seems clearer as nominations commenced in the Labour leadership contest to succeed Keir Starmer, with former defense minister Al Carns, the only potential challenger, confirming he will not run against Burnham, likely leading to an uncontested appointment on July 20.

Haigh disclosed in an interview on the BBC’s Political Thinking podcast that Burnham has long harbored ambitions for the top role, having previously contested leadership twice. She emphasized that he has been actively planning and strategizing for this moment for at least a year.

Regarding the first 100 days in office, Haigh confirmed the existence of a detailed plan but refrained from divulging specifics during the podcast.

Haigh, instrumental in Burnham’s successful Makerfield by-election campaign, has been collaborating with Burnham and James Purnell, the expected new Chief of Staff at No10, focusing on national security, the economy, and devolution.

In light of comments from Starmer’s former Chief of Staff, Morgan McSweeney, acknowledging Labour’s lack of readiness for power ahead of the 2024 general election, Haigh defended Burnham against claims of being unprepared due to his tenure as Mayor of Greater Manchester.

Haigh criticized Starmer for her abrupt removal from the Cabinet and accused his team of tarnishing her reputation with subsequent briefings. She recounted the circumstances that led to her resignation as Transport Secretary in 2024 after admitting to a criminal offense.

She highlighted the challenging conversations she had with Starmer’s team before resigning, citing a lack of transparency and an alleged smear campaign against her character following her departure from the Cabinet.
