An individual has succumbed to measles, as confirmed by health authorities, amidst a surge in cases nationwide.
Health officials revealed that an adult with an underlying immunological condition passed away due to the disease. This development follows the tragic deaths of two children in England from measles in June.
Recent statistics released by the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) indicate a total of 883 confirmed measles instances in England from the beginning of the year until July 6.
All regions in England have documented cases, with a majority (52%) in London, 17% in the West Midlands, and 10% in the North West, as per the UKHSA. The majority of cases involve children aged 10 and below, as stated by the government agency.
In response to the escalating situation, NHS leaders initiated a catch-up campaign targeting parents of 2 to 11-year-old children who missed the MMR vaccine safeguarding against measles, mumps, and rubella. The MMR/V vaccine now also offers protection against chickenpox.
Health authorities aim to reach out to approximately a million families with children who missed one or both doses of the vaccine. Data from the first quarter of the year shows that 84.1% of five-year-olds had received both MMR vaccine doses.
General practitioners will contact parents of children under six years old, while those with children aged six to eleven will receive notifications via the NHS app, text, email, or letter.
Earlier this year, the World Health Organization declared that the UK no longer met the criteria for measles elimination. This announcement, made in January, followed a plateau in vaccination coverage and a surge in cases.
Measles spreads through infected individuals exhaling, coughing, or sneezing droplets into the air or water. Besides fatalities, in rare instances, it can lead to vision impairment, hearing loss, and neurological issues. Infected individuals are contagious from the onset of symptoms until four days after the rash emerges.
Concerns grew earlier in the year regarding low vaccination rates, with unvaccinated children potentially facing exclusion from school during an outbreak of measles, mumps, and rubella.
The World Health Organization noted that measles, previously eliminated in the UK between 2021 and 2023, reappeared from 2024 due to vaccine coverage dipping below the 95% threshold required for herd immunity.
Typical measles symptoms commence with cold-like signs, followed by a rash a few days later, often accompanied by small mouth spots.
The initial stages of measles manifest with cold-like symptoms. Subsequently, small white spots may emerge inside the cheeks and on the lips’ back after a few days.
Later on, following the cold-like symptoms, a rash typically appears on the face and behind the ears before spreading to other body areas.
