A British pensioner accused of being involved in international drug trafficking is set to have his case officially closed tomorrow, enabling his immediate return to the UK. William “Billy Boy” Eastment, 80, faces challenges in funding his flight back due to financial constraints.

Eastment, a retired heavy goods vehicle and bus fitter from Milborne Port, Somerset, was detained for close to a year in Santiago 1 Penitentiary in Chile after authorities found methamphetamine worth approximately £200,000 concealed in his luggage upon his arrival from Mexico.

His legal representatives successfully advocated for the case’s closure on health grounds, citing Eastment’s deteriorating health conditions while incarcerated. The decision to end the case was reached to expedite Eastment’s return home, considering his health concerns and the complexity of a prolonged legal process.

Neighbors and acquaintances of Eastment were surprised by his arrest, as he was known in his community as an avid fishing and bowls enthusiast rather than a suspected drug courier. Eastment claimed he was deceived by scammers who misled him into unknowingly transporting drugs, emphasizing his lack of awareness regarding the illicit contents in his luggage.

Efforts were made to secure Eastment’s release under monitored conditions, but complications arose due to his medical issues and financial situation. Being a tourist in Chile, Eastment was ineligible for the national health system, leaving him burdened with unaffordable medical expenses.

Authorities required a financial guarantor for his release, highlighting the urgency for a family member to step in and provide financial support. Eastment’s sole source of income, his UK state pension, was inaccessible during his detention in Chile, adding to his financial woes.

With the imminent closure of the case, months of legal battles come to an end, paving the way for Eastment’s repatriation. The closure aims to expedite his return to the UK amid ongoing health concerns and financial constraints.
