A man has been sentenced to life in prison with a minimum term of 35 years for shooting his lodger and concealing the body in a barrel filled with concrete. Christopher Wright, 73, was found guilty of murdering and dismembering 55-year-old Richard Dyson after a six-year cover-up.
Richard Dyson went missing in November 2019 while residing on property owned by Wright in Barnsley. His daughter reported him missing, leading to an investigation that uncovered his severed remains inside a barrel filled with concrete on a nearby farm six years later.
Wright’s childhood friend, Karl Schwalbe, 72, was also convicted for his involvement in concealing the crime and received a three-year jail sentence. The presiding judge, Mr. Justice Cotter, stated that Wright is likely to spend the rest of his life in prison. He remarked on Wright’s skills as a former butcher, capable of committing such a gruesome act.
In a victim impact statement, Richard Dyson’s daughter, Bethany Dainty, expressed the agony of not knowing the truth about her father’s fate for so long, preventing her from grieving. During the investigation, Wright and Schwalbe were caught on camera discussing evidence gathered by the police, showcasing their attempts to obstruct justice.
Evidence from phone records, CCTV footage, forensic analysis, and covert recordings revealed the extent of Wright and Schwalbe’s involvement in the crime and cover-up. Wright was convicted of murder, preventing a lawful burial, conspiracy to pervert the course of justice, and firearms offenses, while Schwalbe was convicted of conspiracy to pervert the course of justice.
Prosecutors commended the collaboration with South Yorkshire Police in gathering evidence to bring the perpetrators to justice. Detective Chief Inspector Andy Knowles acknowledged the pain endured by Richard Dyson’s family and praised their strength throughout the investigation and trial proceedings. He emphasized the significance of achieving justice for the victim and his loved ones.
