Victims’ aspirations for a public inquiry into the activities of disgraced child abuser Jeffrey Epstein in the UK were disappointed on Wednesday after being initially raised.
Andy Burnham is contemplating meeting with victims to explore potential ways forward, but there is currently no active consideration for an inquiry by Downing Street.
The situation became unclear on Wednesday following statements by Victims Minister Alex Davies-Jones suggesting that the new Prime Minister is exploring the possibility of a public inquiry into Epstein’s UK activities, as well as those of former Harrods owner Mohamed Al Fayed.
Davies-Jones stated that she has been assured of the Prime Minister’s serious approach and commitment to meeting with Epstein’s victims.
In a later statement, the Ministry of Justice expressed solidarity with the victims of Jeffrey Epstein and affirmed ongoing efforts to support victims and survivors, while clarifying that a public inquiry is not presently under active consideration.
According to reports, prominent Labour advocates on Violence Against Women and Girls urged Mr. Burnham to conduct a full public inquiry into Epstein’s UK operations, coinciding with his transition to Prime Minister.
In an interview with BBC Newsnight, Davies-Jones indicated a review of possibilities for inquiries regarding Epstein and Harrods survivors, emphasizing the Prime Minister’s dedication to addressing systemic issues for all victims.
Davies-Jones, reappointed as Victims’ Minister by Burnham, highlighted discussions with him and his team regarding the importance of rebuilding trust in the criminal justice system and ensuring victims are taken seriously.
Epstein survivor Anoushka di Georgiou stressed the need for actions rather than promises, advocating for a comprehensive public inquiry encompassing all relevant cases.
Justice Minister Jake Richards emphasized the importance of thoroughly investigating the crimes related to Epstein and ensuring lessons are learned to prevent similar incidents in the future, noting the Prime Minister’s commitment to exploring the best approach for victims.
