The mother of a woman who passed away through euthanasia following a suicide attempt is seeking to locate individuals who allegedly assaulted her daughter sexually.

Noelia Castillo Ramos, aged 25, died on March 26 at a care facility in Barcelona after becoming paralyzed from a suicide attempt in 2022.

Yolanda Ramos, her mother, has filed two complaints with prosecutors in Barcelona and Tarragona to initiate official investigations into the reported sexual assaults on Noelia. The new evidence of the assaults was found in Noelia’s diary, which she handed to her mother on the day of her demise.

In her diary, Noelia detailed being raped by her ex-boyfriend and disclosed being drugged, given alcohol, and sexually assaulted by three men in Salou, a popular beach destination.

Yolanda stated, “Noelia talked about the assaults on TV, and on the day she passed away, she gave me her diary. Reading it, I understood many things,” as she announced the complaints.

Following the incidents, Noelia attempted suicide but ended up paralyzed. Subsequently, she experienced severe depression, leading to her decision to seek euthanasia.

Noelia explained her wish to die on Spanish television, expressing a desire to end her suffering. Despite her family’s objections to euthanasia, citing the pain she endured over the years, Noelia persisted in her decision.

Noelia’s death sparked controversy in Spain, with her family, particularly her father, challenging her wish to die through legal avenues, including appeals to medical and ethical experts. These challenges were ultimately unsuccessful, culminating in a rejection by the European Court of Human Rights.

Euthanasia has been legal in Catalonia for five years, subject to stringent regulations. While numerous euthanasia requests have been granted, Noelia’s case marks the first to face legal scrutiny.

Additionally, the Christian Lawyers group has launched a petition urging the repeal of euthanasia laws, criticizing them as a failure.

Noelia’s passing occurred on March 26 at the age of 25, underscoring the complexities and debates surrounding end-of-life decisions and legal frameworks in Spain.
