Ukraine’s top military leader, General Oleksandr Syrskyi, has been relieved of his duties following public outcry over the dismissal of the popular Defense Minister. The Defense Minister, Mykhailo Fedorov, announced his removal a week ago due to disagreements with Syrskyi, triggering extensive street demonstrations that highlighted divisions within the military regarding their approach towards Russia.
In response to the protests, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed support for Fedorov, assuring that he would remain part of the administration. Zelensky later offered Fedorov a significant government position aimed at consolidating the country’s technical capabilities and fostering progress, though it remains uncertain if Fedorov has accepted the offer.
Fedorov, a 35-year-old known for his innovative technology strategies and recruitment tactics, led Ukraine’s military during a period of notable achievements. His sudden removal prompted widespread criticism of the military leadership. President Zelensky met with key military officials, acknowledging public sentiment and indicating a willingness to address concerns.
As a gesture of conciliation, Syrskyi issued a public apology to Fedorov in a military publication, taking responsibility for certain initiatives and clarifying his support for drone technology. Following Syrskyi’s dismissal, Mykhailo Drapatyi, commander of Ukraine’s Joint Forces, will assume the role of commander-in-chief. Drapatyi gained recognition for a video from 2014 showing him driving an armored vehicle through a separatist barricade in Mariupol.
Fedorov extended congratulations to Drapatyi on his new position, expressing optimism for the future. He also expressed gratitude towards Syrskyi for his dedication to defending Ukraine.
