A man’s uncle expressed shock over his nephew’s arrest in connection to the murder of public figure Ann Widdecombe. The suspect, a 28-year-old man from Rotherham, South Yorkshire, was apprehended by armed police at his residence on Saturday evening. The uncle, aged 73, shared his disbelief, stating that he was taken aback by the news.
The relative, who chose not to disclose his name, revealed to the BBC that he was greatly surprised by the arrest, mentioning that he felt physically weak upon hearing the news. He emphasized that the nephew was the least likely person he would suspect of such a crime. Ann Widdecombe, a former Conservative minister and current spokeswoman for Reform UK, was reportedly attacked at her home in Haytor Vale, Devon, and was found with severe injuries a day later.
The arrested individual, described as a white British man, is currently under suspicion for murder and potential involvement in acts of terrorism. Counter-terrorism authorities have labeled the incident as a “targeted attack” but are still investigating the motive behind the crime.
The uncle of the suspect, who resides in close proximity but had not seen his nephew in a decade, portrayed him as a reserved and polite individual. He mentioned that the young man had been living with his late father until a few months ago. A neighbor, Courtney Foster, remarked that the suspect rarely left his home after his father’s passing, primarily engaging in activities like reading in the garden or handling household chores.
Devon and Cornwall Police clarified that the case was not initially treated as terrorism-related, and there were no indications of political motivation. The man from Rotherham was first arrested on suspicion of murder before being re-arrested on terrorism-related charges. The incident has sparked discussions on the safety of members of parliament, particularly focusing on the well-being of public figures like Ann Widdecombe, who served as an MP for Maidstone from 1987 to 2010.
