Fury has erupted among Falklands veterans and politicians following an incident at the World Cup semi-final where players displayed a banner proclaiming “the Falklands are Argentinian.” Premier League stars Lisandro Martinez, Cristian Romero, and Julian Alvarez were among those involved in parading the sign, which read “Las Malvinas son Argentinas.” The banner, initially brought by fans into the stadium in Atlanta, found its way onto the pitch after the match.

The tense atmosphere at the start of the game was marked by loud booing during the national anthems. Argentina’s vice-president, Victoria Villarruel, celebrated the victory, emphasizing the significance of the match and posting a video seemingly depicting Argentinian soldiers. She had earlier referred to England as “invaders” and “usurping pirates,” setting a confrontational tone leading up to the match.

Simon Weston, a Falklands War veteran who suffered severe burns during the conflict, expressed his dismay over the incident, calling for appropriate action to be taken. He criticized the players’ actions as immature and hurtful, emphasizing the importance of respecting the sovereignty and democracy of the Falkland Islanders. Weston also highlighted the need for responsible behavior from Argentine politicians to prevent incitement of hatred.

Jarvis Burt, who lost his brother in the Falklands War, echoed sentiments of respect for the fallen and condemned the players’ actions, emphasizing the pain caused by the display of the controversial banner. He called for FIFA to take strict measures against the players for breaching rules on political messages during matches.

Lib Dem leader Ed Davey joined the chorus of disapproval, urging FIFA to bar the players involved from the World Cup final due to their actions. The potential disciplinary action against the players could be based on violating tournament rules prohibiting the display of political messages by players.

The British political leaders, including Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Tory leader Kemi Badenoch, reiterated the UK’s stance on the Falkland Islands, emphasizing British sovereignty and support for the islanders’ right to self-determination. The ongoing political tensions between Argentina and the UK over the Falklands were reignited by the incident, with the Falkland Island Legislative Assembly expressing trauma from the conflict and denouncing the insensitivity of the banner display.

This latest controversy involving Argentina players adds to their history of provocative actions, with previous instances of complaints over discriminatory remarks. The incident has sparked calls for FIFA to uphold the rules and ensure respectful behavior from all players on the pitch.
