A man has been sentenced to jail for defrauding another man of £177,000 after deceiving him into a fake relationship over a period of more than three years. Joshua Teale, 30, exploited the victim by fabricating stories about personal tragedies, such as the death of his mother and needing financial assistance due to contracting Covid. However, instead of using the money for legitimate purposes, Teale squandered it on online gambling platforms.

The victim, delivering his impact statement at Leeds Crown Court on July 17, expressed his devastation, stating that he sacrificed years of his life and financial stability to support Teale’s fraudulent schemes. Their acquaintance began at Arla Foods factory in Leeds in 2018, where they initially became friends. Despite never suspecting Teale’s true intentions, the victim was manipulated into providing financial aid.

Following Teale’s abrupt departure from their workplace, he reappeared in the victim’s life in 2020, claiming to be in urgent need of funds to settle alleged debts. Subsequently, Teale continued to concoct elaborate lies, including the fake death of his mother, to extort money from the victim on a monthly basis. Additionally, Teale fabricated documents from a fictitious law firm to bolster his deceptive narratives.

As the victim’s bank raised concerns about the suspicious transactions in May 2023, they intervened and involved the authorities. Teale was apprehended, where he admitted to struggling with a gambling addiction but initially denied any wrongdoing. However, on the day of his trial, Teale confessed to the fraud charge, acknowledging the harm he caused.

During the court proceedings, Teale’s defense attorney, Matthew Harding, highlighted his client’s gambling addiction but emphasized that it did not excuse his actions. The judge, Recorder Richard Paige, denounced Teale’s calculated deception as a premeditated crime that inflicted significant financial and emotional distress on the victim. Consequently, Teale was sentenced to five years and three months in prison for his fraudulent activities.
