Keir Starmer is set to journey to Kyiv today to reaffirm Britain’s unwavering support for Ukraine as his term in office nears its end. In one of his final responsibilities as Prime Minister, Mr. Starmer will hold discussions with Ukraine’s wartime leader, Volodymyr Zelensky, in the Ukrainian capital to address the issue of supporting Kyiv in its resistance against Russia’s unlawful invasion that has lasted over four years.

During the meeting, Mr. Starmer will convey to President Zelensky the UK’s resolute backing in the face of Vladimir Putin’s aggression and express optimism for a sustainable peace ahead. Opting to visit Ukraine for his concluding international trip before passing the baton to Andy Burnham on Monday, the PM emphasized the remarkable resilience of the Ukrainian people throughout the conflict, highlighting their unwavering spirit that has not only safeguarded their own freedom but also upheld Europe’s security.

In anticipation of the visit, Mr. Starmer stated, “I have witnessed the remarkable resilience of the Ukrainian people and the strong determination of a nation that refuses to back down throughout this conflict.” He further emphasized the unity of the UK and its allies against Russian aggression through the Coalition of the Willing and NATO, emphasizing Britain’s enduring support for Ukraine.

During his last Prime Minister’s Questions (PMQs) session, Mr. Starmer recounted his previous meeting with Mr. Zelensky in Downing Street after an encounter with Donald Trump in 2025. He reiterated his commitment to stand by Ukraine and its people, highlighting the solidarity shown by Britons outside Downing Street during Mr. Zelensky’s visit.

This week, Emmanuel Macron honored Mr. Starmer with the Legion d’honneur, recognizing his pivotal role in uniting the coalition supporting Ukraine. Mr. Burnham, poised to be designated as Labour’s next leader on Friday, also affirmed Britain’s unwavering support for Ukraine, emphasizing the interconnectedness of British and Euro-Atlantic security with the situation in Ukraine.

Meanwhile, Russia continues its assault on Ukraine, with recent attacks claiming lives in Odesa and Sumy. The ongoing bombardment has targeted Ukraine’s vital ports along the Black Sea, impacting the country’s export capabilities.
