The UK government has announced the acquisition of British Steel to ensure the continuity of steel production in the country. The Department for Business and Trade (DBT) emphasized the importance of preserving steel manufacturing at British Steel’s facility in Scunthorpe, Lincolnshire, to safeguard the company’s future and support UK supply chains. This decision, facilitated by new legislation, has safeguarded numerous jobs at British Steel after the government intervened last year to prevent the collapse of the steel industry by assuming control of the operations in Scunthorpe.
Keir Starmer expressed that British Steel is integral to the nation’s industrial heritage and emphasized that the move secures the future of steelmaking in the UK, protecting skilled jobs and ensuring a critical national capability. The enactment of a new law now permits ministers to transfer ownership of steel businesses into public hands.
Business Secretary Peter Kyle justified the nationalization of British Steel as a measure to maintain steel production capability in the national interest and ensure the sustainability and competitiveness of the steel sector for years to come. Formerly owned by the Chinese company Jingye, British Steel’s Scunthorpe blast furnaces were on the brink of closure, prompting Parliament to pass special measures to keep the plant operational.
British Steel’s interim chief executive, Allan Bell, hailed the nationalization as a significant milestone for the company and the wider manufacturing sector in the UK. He emphasized the importance of securing the future of British Steel, thereby enhancing national security and infrastructure.
